Homebound workouts

I don’t know about you, but driving with the threat of icy roads or black ice scares the bejeezus out of me!  Luckily, I’m married to an expert driver who always gives me tips on how to drive in any given condition.  See his moves..

Fortunately, going out to drive when I don’t have to no longer annoys me.  In the past, if I couldn’t get myself to the gym, I got angry – unjustifiably angry.  Thank goodness for Exercise TV on demand and my latest purchase.  I was very lucky to win a contest that Lily held several months ago.  It took me a long time to decide what to get.  CSN, after all, is a very expansive website with far too many good things to choose from.

I ended up picking out something that I could use to accompany my Exercise TV workouts –

Adjustable 40 lb. Dumbell Set

Very cool, no?  I can interchange these to go from 5 lbs. up to 40 lbs. (or 20 lbs. each).  I broke them out today for my first at-home strength training set.

I didn’t use an on demand program, but threw together this superfast upper body routine:

I might hate myself for doing this routine this morning since I am planning to do a Kettlebell class tonight, but I simply couldn’t wait to bust open my new goodies.  (I’ve got something else coming too, but you’ll just have to wait to see what that is!)  Thanks again, Lily!  You made my day!

I’m off to pack my bags.  I get to spend the evening with this cutie (who you might recognize):

He’s got a new sister, too!  I promise to give you a peek at her cuteness too!

I am thankful..

1. That the gym is open on Thanksgiving Day so that I can burn the calories before gorging on them.

2. That I can eat said calories with my husband, parents and grandmother by my side.

3. For delicious food to share with my family

Cran-Apple Sauce

12 oz. fresh cranberries

2/3 C splenda, granulated

1 tsp cinnamon

1 package of unflavored gelatin

1 C peeled, chopped apples (crisp, tart apples work best – I used Fuji)

1/2 C pineapple chunks, drained

Add cranberries, splenda and cinnamon to a medium saucepan.  Add 1 3/4 C water and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minuts, stirring occasionally.  Meanwhile, mix 1/4 C cold water and gelatin in small bowl.  Stir until dissolved.

Once berries have popped, remove saucepan from heat, add gelatin mixture, apples and cinnamon and mix well.  Chill in fridge for several hours (or overnight).  Stir in pineapple just before serving.

This got rave reviews from Dad and requests to make it for his holiday luncheon at work.  We have a winner, folks!

5. That I was given the opportunity to pet-sit this cutie for my in-laws so that they could celebrate the wedding of my sister-in-law yesterday.

7. For December’s arrival and 1 more month to achieve the goals that I set out to accomplish in January.  Not just that, but I love everything about the holidays.  Family, festitivities, food and fun.  It usually translates to a month of excitement.

Here’s to you, December.  Try not to speed by like the rest of the year!

Back to the norm

My tummy has been all out of sorts for the past few days, courtesy of bad food or a stomach bug.  Either way, it finally loosened its grip and let me have my life back, starting with an awesome cardio/upper body morning at the gym.

I really enjoyed my bowl of apple-cinnamon custard oats after this, but it feels almost inappropriate today as it is supposed to be 73 degrees.  On November 23rd… 73 degrees.  I’m not sure our trees, dressed for Fall, will know what’s going on!

I was on a roll this morning and decided to throw together another batch of White and Dark Chocolate Berry Bark using this recipe.  This time, I threw some Multi-Grain Cheerios on top:

The swirl is a bit better.  Practice makes perfect, I suppose!  My mom has already insisted that we make this for our Christmas plates.  It’s so easy to make huge batches for giving as gifts and it’s extremely affordable!

I’ve got another few hours to kill before work and with this much energy, I think I’ll use it to do some cleaning… or dog-walking.  With the latter, I can enjoy this beautiful day before it drops to the low 50’s on Thursday.  I think Maggie will appreciate if I choose the latter.  She clearly needs to get some motivation and some energy of her own!

Working for the weekend

Happy Valentine’s Day!  It was a good one for me with fun moments with hubby scrunched into my work time – I worked yesterday and today and had pet-sitting duties on top of that.  I can’t complain too much, though.. look at this face!

Work activities included a men’s bball game (which we won!) and a day-long cheering event full of scantily clad toddlers (no, I’m not kidding), tweens and teens, along with their awful, rude mothers!  It was not a pleasant way to begin my Valentine’s.  Luckily, hubby was waiting to ease my tension when I got home and I had a beautiful bouquet waiting for me full of carnations and baby roses.  Smelled as lovely as it looked..

I was super excited to give Steve his gift (more like a gift for us both, I cannot lie).  I got him a Blu Ray player along with the newest Harry Potter on Blu Ray.  Squee!!  Post-present exchange, he shocked me by ordering a new television for us!  Double squee!!

Our V-day date was spent at Uno’s, which was surprisingly unfilled.  I figured we’d have at least a 30-minute wait, but we were seated right away.  Good vibes.. good vibes.  I ordered a salad that I have not gotten before:

CHINOIS CHICKEN SALAD
Shreds of Napa and green cabbage, carrots, lime-marinated grilled chicken breast, crispy tortilla strips and field greens are tossed in a soy-ginger vinaigrette then sprinkled with cilantro and sesame seeds. (as described by the menu)

I had the tortilla strips removed and the dressing on the side.  It was easily one of my top 5 salads of all time!  The lime marinade made the chicken super yummy!  I will return for this one.

Other weekend eats included some awesomeness – Friday night spaghetti (Newman’s Own Sockarooni Sauce + ground turkey).  Mine was served over Tofu Shirataki Noodles with creminis and spinach.

Notice those bread wedges?  I got a little creative with my broiler – toasted up a Sun-dried Tomato Flat Out wrap with salt and garlic powder.  Hubby’s had some bubbly cheddar on top.

 

Perfect accompaniment to spaghetti!  Other weekend eats included a fab lunch –  2 Morningstar Farms Grillers Chick’n patties with some steamed asian-style veggies.  The condiments were yellow mustard and REDUCED SUGAR ketchup.  I love that I was able to find this stuff!  How do you like the ketchup/mustard artwork?

Sunday’s breakfast was a warming bowl o’ oats with blueberries, 0% Fage with some MixMyGranola thrown in. 

It was a good pick-me-up before dealing with the cheerleaders.

I’m so glad that I got to spend (part of) today with the love of my life, especially since today is our first married V-day.  I am eager to spend the next 50 with him too!

Did you do anything out of the ordinary today or just veg out?  Personally, I’m looking forward to my veg out on Tuesday and my early morning workout tomorrow!

puppies and popcorn

My 2 current indulgences are listed above – a big bowl of low fat popcorn and the sight of a cute pup playing with a giant rope.  In fact, Atlas keeps eyeballing me and hoping that I will drop a piece of my delicious popcorn.  Not a chance, furball!

Amazingly enough, these aren’t even the highlights of my day.  Those would be;

1. Quickie ab workout this morning, courtesy of exercise tv..

2. A follow-up waist measurement and joyous celebration upon realizing I’ve lost an inch!

3. And an awesome new bread recipe

Choco Nanner PB2 Bread

(Modified from this recipe)

1 1/4 C whole wheat flour

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 cup unpacked brown sugar

5 egg whites

3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

2 large, ripe bananas

1/2 cup rolled oats

6 Tbsp PB2

1/2 cup semisweet chocolate or carob chips

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. In large bowl, mix 1st 4 ingredients until thoroughly combined.  Add egg whites and applesauce and stir to combine. 
  3. In small bowl, mash bananas.  Add bananas and oats to batter.
  4. In microwave safe measuring cup, melt chocolate chips (about 1 minute on high) and stir until smooth.  Add 1 cup of batter to melted chocolate and mix well.
  5. In remaining batter, stir in PB2. 
  6. Spray a loaf pan (LIGHTLY) with cooking spray and add batters alternately.  Swirl together using a knife. 
  7. Bake until top of loaf is firm to touch, about 45-50 minutes. 

I used my new purchase for the egg whites – from Egg Whites International!

Happy super bowl sunday!

It’s both Super Bowl Sunday and Doggy Duty Sunday as I am now taking care of 2 incredibly awesome pups (Please forgive the photo qualities in this post.  The only option I have to capture things today is my phone!)

This is Sunny, a Labradoodle rescue.

And this little pitbull monster is Atlas – also a rescue.  How cute do they look sleeping together in my backseat on their way home?!

A better look at them both –

They get a LOT of love!  Too much cuteness in 2 packages!  They are the reason that my week will be a little busy, but they make it so worth it! 

Before these guys got their dose of playtime this morning, I got my playtime at the gym and had a MONDO leg workout that started with 20 minutes of killer elliptical hills.

  1. Leg Press – 2 sets of 12 at 90# and 1 set of 12 at 110#
  2. Superset 1 with Calf Presses – 2 sets of 20 at 90# and 1 set of 20 at 110#
  3. 30 seconds of DB boxing in between sets
  4. Split Squats on Bench with 15# DBs – 3 sets of 8 each leg
  5. 30 seconds of High Knees in between sets
  6. Step Ups with Glute Squeeze with 15# DBs – 3 sets of 8 each leg
  7. 30 seconds of DB boxing in between sets
  8. Ballerina Plie Squats – 1 set of 10 with 45# DB; 2 sets of 15 with 55# DB
  9. 30 seconds of High Knees in between sets

I cooled down with another 10 minutes on the elliptical with my heart rate hovering around 150.  That was more than enough for me on a Sunday, but with no idea what kind of food I will be facing at the in-laws tonight, I wanted to go all out!

I’m working this afternoon at a women’s basketball game with a small snack to keep me until tonight –

A Vanilla Rooibos hot tea (just the tea for me please!) and the biggest, crunchiest Fuji apple I’ve had in a long time!  Yum!

Jillian begged me to pick up this issue a few weeks ago.  I can’t help it, but I LOVE the woman’s body.  I aspire to have those arms!

Can you read what “Inspiring Weight Loss Blog” #2 is?  Ya can’t?  Well it’s Tina over at Carrots ‘N’ Cake.  Apparently, the brilliant writers at Fitness mag love her as much as I do!

On a side note, has anyone tried the Matte dark nail polish colors like I did?  I can’t get over how fast they dry!  Unfortunately, they chip rather quickly..

Hope your Super Bowl Sunday turns out to be an enjoyable one!  I can’t wait to see what goodies you’ll be snacking on.  Do you have a favorite game time snack?  I’ve always been partial to fresh veggies with hummus and steamed shrimp (sans the cocktail sauce!).
